Zephyr Agent Wes Freas Delivers With Project Open Hand

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Nov 7, 2011) - For 20 years, Zephyr agent Wes Freas has volunteered at Project Open Hand. In his first decade of service, Freas volunteered to deliver meals. When he joined the Zephyr team 10 years ago, he discovered that Project Open Hand was an ongoing commitment among Zephyr agents, and he subsequently became the Zephyr coordinator. As the coordinator, Freas promotes the program, recruits participants, schedules the teams and ensures that it happens every week.

Project Open Hand was founded in 1985 by Ruth Brinker, a retired grandmother who lost a friend to AIDS. Understanding that malnutrition was causing death nearly as often as the illness, Brinker enlisted the help of friends and began to provide meals to seven clients. Word spread and the client base rapidly grew. Brinker drafted more volunteers, and Project Open Hand was born; it has continued to grow ever since.

The scope of Project Open Hand has also expanded and now includes the homebound, critically ill and those who have limited social services available to them. Brinker's legacy of "nutrition with compassion" is alive and well.

"Working with Project Open Hand was a real eye opener for me right from the start," remarked Freas about his service. "To see such a great need and be a part of filling that need is beyond gratifying."

Volunteers work with a team of chefs, filling grocery orders, delivering meals, serving at various senior lunch sites throughout San Francisco, and working at special events to support the program. More than 125 volunteers are needed daily to prepare, package and deliver meals and groceries. Those wishing to volunteer may visit the website's volunteerism page at

In addition to his work with Project Open Hand, Freas hosts the annual Margaritas on the Deck Party, which is held on Pride Weekend to benefit the LGBT Center and its programs. He was recognized with the Community Service Award from New Leaf Services two years ago. He has also supported, both as host and sponsor, the Real Bad circuit party for the past 20 years. Real Bad's fundraising focus is on civil rights, community development, social services, HIV/AIDS and other health-related issues. Over $1.25 million for such worthy beneficiaries has been raised in its 23-year history.

Wes Freas is a REALTOR®, Zephyr Top Producer, and a member in good standing of the San Francisco, California and National Associations of REALTORS®, and is a member of the Zephyr Premiere Property Group. Prior to joining Zephyr, he built a successful career in the hotel and hospitality industry.
