Zumba® Influences Transformation Journey on Season 4 Premiere Episode of ABC's Extreme Weight Loss

Charita Smith Looks to Zumba to Aid Weight Loss in Emotional Episode Airing May 27, 2014

MIAMI, FL--(Marketwired - May 22, 2014) - Zumba -- the global multimedia fitness leader and creator of the acclaimed Zumba® dance-fitness workout -- is proud to honor Charita Smith of Colorado Springs, CO, whose weight loss journey, in which the Zumba program played an important role, will be featured on the premiere episode of ABC's Extreme Weight Loss on May 27 (8 pm EST). The hit series is a unique, non-competitive show about weight loss that documents the unprecedented 365-day experience of courageous, "super obese" participants, led by transformation specialists and trainers Chris and Heidi Powell.

While Charita's progress and achievements were clearly impacted by the talent and devotion of Chris and Heidi, and the inspiration of Zumba, viewers will have to tune in to the May 27 premiere to find out what happened in the end.

According to a recent consumer survey, nearly 75% of consumers agree that dance-based fitness classes are more popular than ever -- making fitness fun and a workout that consumers actually look forward to doing.

"For Charita, finding something she enjoyed was a key part of the process -- and since she loves to dance the Zumba program was a perfect match," recounts Extreme Weight Loss co-host Chris Powell. "On top of that, we were able to address another issue in her life by becoming licensed Zumba instructors [together] so she could make an income while doing her cardio."

Charita grew up continuously having to overcome traumatic experiences, and she had always used dance as an outlet to express herself and let go of life's everyday struggles and hardships. Charita's weight loss journey hit a pinnacle moment when Chris and Heidi Powell suggested they all become licensed Zumba instructors. From there, Charita focused on teaching classes, both to supplement her income and as a way to support her weight-loss program and stay healthy. Along the way, she realized she could use this love and passion for dance not only to help herself, but also to inspire others -- even realizing she could embark on a new career path with Zumba.

"Zumba has become a huge part of my life, not only in helping to transform my body and supplement my income, but in giving me a new dancing spirit," said Charita. "I love how Zumba reaches everyone exactly where they are. I started teaching at a pretty heavy weight but Zumba helped give me confidence and fueled my will. Zumba will always be a part of my life!"

Zumba CEO Alberto Perlman comments, "By merging her passion for dance with her desire to be fit, Charita created a fun, satisfying workout experience that altered her life. We're thrilled for her and hope that her story continues to inspire people to live healthier, happier lives."
